Background: Forward head posture (FHP) is characterized by the anterior positioning of the cervical spine, shifting the head forward relative to the cervical vertebrae, thereby altering the centre of gravity. This posture can result from several factors, such as prolonged use of computers and mobile phones, using large pillows, poor sleeping postures, weak back muscles, and a lack of calcium. This misalignment impacts the classic spinal curvature, affecting the upright stance and horizontal gaze.
Objective: The study aims to determine the prevalence of forward head posture and its associated effects on the cervical spine among Dolphin Police bike riders.
Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 110 participants recruited through non-probability convenience sampling from Dolphin Police command centres across various locations. The study spanned six months. Participants were selected based on the following inclusion criteria: ages 18 to 40 years, daily bike riding for at least 7 hours, and wearing helmets for about 6 hours a day. Subjects who had spinal fractures or had undergone cervical spine surgery were excluded. Data collection was comprehensive, ensuring the reliability of the results through informed consent and specific operational parameters.
Results: Among the 110 participants, 93 (84.55%) exhibited forward head posture, while 17 (15.45%) did not. Statistical analysis showed no significant impact of FHP on the lumbar lordotic curve (p-value = 0.944) and thoracic kyphosis (p-value = 0.44), with the threshold for significance set at p ≤ 0.05.
Conclusion: The study identified a high prevalence of forward head posture among Dolphin Police bike riders. However, there was no statistically significant effect of FHP on the lumbar lordosis and thoracic kyphosis curves.
